Hanging With Mr.Cooper - Alice, That Is
(Sassy, 1994-00-00)

ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE Last year I went to a Grateful Dead concert. Yeah, we did a little pot. It was not a big deal...until a girl I knew from my hometown came over to talk to me. She handed me her pipe and we toked a little more. Recently I've decided that I want to forget about s--t like that. But I swear that bitch read my mind and decided to tell my backstabbing brother what we did. Now he is holding it over my head, and I want revenge. --Hateful Hemp. First of all, what were you doing at a Grateful Deadn concert? Anyway, there's got to be a way to strike a deal with your brother. He must have done something you can counter him with. If that fails, just start planning for the future. See, when I was a brother to my sister, if something like that happened, I'd say, "Look, don't tell Mom and Dad. Yet. For your own good. Because you can use it as a bargaining chip later, when you do something really stupid. Then we can balance it out. If not, say six months go by, and you don't say anything, I'll pay you 50 bucks." So it's a matter of negotiations; it's the art of the deal. And quit smoking that pot. ...

I can think of other things far more tempting than the latest Alice Cooper offering, to be honest. And I fear that only die-hard Coop freaks will fully appreciate the finer elements of the album. As a concept records go, this baby is a big sluggish. Still, it is Alice's first full-on effort since 'From The Inside', so perhaps he could be forgiven if the plot gets a little cloudy or the music just becomes a little lame at times. Last Temptation Album Review
(People, 1994-06-20)

Alice Cooper's glory days as the king of early-'70s shock rock may be long gone, but he still commands respect in fairly hip circles, as evidenced by the participation here of alternative whippersnappers Don Fleming (leader of power pop act Gumball) and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. The latter cowrote and sings on "Stolen Prayer," the album's best track, while Fleming produced a number of the rockers, whipping up a cheesy metal souffle that is notwithout charm. Some advice: You will enjoy this a lot more if you skip the ballads (most are dreadful) and forget that this is supposed to be a concept album (an exploration of good and evil, with Alice as a malevolent carnival barker). If such Stephen King0like storylines intrigue you, however, the album comes with a comic-book adaptation - the better to understand the great man's, uh, vision. (Epic) ...

Last Temptation Album Review
(Rolling Stone, 1994-07-14)

If you went to high school in the '70s, Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" and "School's Out" became part of your life. Cooper dirges like "Desperado" and "Muscle Of Love" used dense Black Sabbath rumbling to rock in ways no '80s or '90s art-metal band has matched. On the other hand, the psychedelic back-up vocals in Soundgarden's "Spoonman" prove just how much Whitesnake-era grunge owes the Watergate-era kind. So it's no surprise to find Soundgarden howler Chris Cornell, not to mention sometime Sonic Youth and White Zombie producers Don Fleming and Andy Wallace, working with Alice now....

Classicks Album Review
(Q Magazine, 1995-12-00)

Surviving the stigma of the deliberately mis-spelt album title, this latest collection brings together the polar opposites of Cooper's career in a mascara-smeared 60-minute special. Surviving drug, alcohol and golf, he kickstarted a somewhat moribund period of his life with Poison, a full-throated rocking roar with a mesmeric melodic hookline, and the equally bumptious singles Hey Stoopid, Feed My Frankenstein and Love's A Loaded Gun. The rest of his later period is signposted by big brash melodies and brainstorming fretboard histrionics dished out leading edge guitar mafiosi of the calibre of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Contractual complications dictate that the early songs are represented by live versions of School's Out, Under My Wheels, Only Women Bleed and a titanic No More Mr. Nice Guy. ***...
